There is something about creating with media that is slightly out of one’s control that produces powerful work. ‘Soumates’ is a series done on a mixed media background of acrylic and paper collage and gesso. The drawing is then done in India ink from a live model using a thin broken wooden dowel which is shaped into a point. Unexpected nuances occur with the unwieldy ink and the figure or portrait that emerges is what I would call ‘wrestled’ into existence. One collection is titled ‘Soumates’ – they are people that I am quite sure I have known.
The ‘Fridas’ are the powerful women that come forth – influenced by the strength and courage of artist Frida Kahlo. They arrive in many different formats but they are usually colourful and confident. There is no holding them back and there is no dampening down their voice. They are about the fact that it is completely fine to be who you are. I have experimented with painting them as more subtle entities but they just won’t be toned down.
